Project Overview

The City of Madison is the capital city of Wisconsin, and home to the University of Wisconsin's flagship campus. It's the second largest (and fastest growing) city in Wisconsin, with a population of 270,000 residents.

Challenges

Madison had long relied on its own developers to manage their website. Over time, the site became overly complex and difficult to sustain. The City needed an experienced partner in web development, accessibility, and best practices to lead a comprehensive rebuild and ensure long-term maintainability.

Solutions

Drawing on years of experience supporting government clients, our team worked closely with Madison to design a more sustainable website. We began with a full audit of the existing build, then created a plan to simplify the architecture, remove unnecessary elements, and prioritize essential functionality.

A defining aspect of this project was our partnership with Madison’s internal development team. The City wanted its developers directly involved, both to learn from our process and to take full ownership after launch. We guided the team through best practices in build planning, migration strategy, layout and theming, and CMS configuration.

Pairing with a client’s team required clear coordination. We established a joint Jira board, dedicated Slack channel, and weekly project check-ins to ensure alignment and keep the project moving smoothly.

Results

This project was considered a success when our services were no longer needed. The Madison team was trained on the new build and took over maintenance after launch.

Post-launch, we turned to an additional city website in need of an upgrade, https://mostmadison.org/. We had earned the trust of the City, and managed the entire content migration and site rebuild of this after-school program website ourselves.
