We’ve been building accessible websites since Electric Citizen was founded in 2012. Early on, we recognized that accessibility is fundamental to good design, effective communication, and public service—and we made it a standard part of every project, whether explicitly requested or not.

Every designer and developer on our team is trained in accessibility best practices and understands both the requirements and intent of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). From initial planning through launch and beyond, accessibility informs how we design, build, and support websites.

Automated Testing

Automated testing plays an important role in identifying accessibility issues at scale. We regularly test websites against current WCAG standards using tools such as aXe, Google Lighthouse, and WAVE, along with enterprise auditing platforms including DubBot, Siteimprove, and Acquia Optimize.

These tools help surface errors, warnings, and patterns across pages—providing a strong baseline for accessibility review and ongoing monitoring.

Manual Testing

Automated testing alone is not sufficient to ensure a usable, accessible experience.

We conduct manual testing to evaluate how real users interact with a site, including:

Navigating pages using only a keyboard
Reviewing content and navigation with screen readers and voiceover tools
Assessing reading level, clarity, and content structure
Evaluating visual design for legibility, contrast, and focus states
Reviewing animations and motion to ensure they are non-disruptive and optional

Manual testing allows us to identify issues that tools can’t catch and to ensure accessibility improvements translate into meaningful usability.

User Training and Editor Tools

While design and code establish the foundation for accessibility, long-term compliance depends heavily on content and editorial workflows.

We provide accessibility training for site editors as part of our project delivery and documentation, covering topics such as headings, links, images, media, and content structure. This helps teams create and maintain accessible content with confidence.

We also configure editorial tools that support accessibility as content is created and updated, including:

AI-assisted tools for generating accurate image alt text
