About Drupal CMS

At DrupalCon 2024, one of the biggest announcements was the start of a bold, ambitious new Drupal initiative, codenamed "Drupal Starshot."

The goal was to rapidly develop and build a brand-new, user-friendly version of Drupal, while bringing in a series of much-needed innovations and improvements to the CMS. The idea was to improve the ease of installation of Drupal for non-technical users, and grow the community.

Out of this initiative grew a plan to begin offering Drupal in two new "flavors" – the original, developer-friendly, enterprise-scale "core" Drupal install we use today, and a more accessible version that anyone could quickly install and start using today. The latter is what later got named "Drupal CMS."

It's still the same "core" Drupal software powering both versions. But Drupal CMS is designed for a better out-of-the-box experience. Instead of relying on the end user to know where to begin (picking modules, configuring various scripts and installers, etc.), Drupal CMS offers a fast on-ramp to begin using Drupal immediately.

Through community contributed modules, Drupal CMS includes new features like Automatic Updates (for keeping software up-to-date), Recipes (for installed preconfigured features like an Event calendar), and Project Browser (for finding and installing new modules on your site, all within Drupal), and Experience Builder (for drag-and-drop layout tools).

January 15, 2025 is the release date for version 1.0 of Drupal CMS! We're excited to reach this important milestone and look forward to future releases to come.
