The Drupal community is large. 25 years after it first launched, Drupal remains a widely used CMS– both across the US and around the world. And with that community comes hundreds if not thousands of agencies who claim Drupal experience.
So how do you make your choice?
First look at case studies and portfolios. Who has more than a few Drupal sites? Or any? It may be hard to tell which sites are Drupal, so you may need to ask.
Next, check out their team. Do they have developers on staff, or will they just be outsourcing your project to someone else? See if they talk about Drupal anywhere on their site, outside of a single word mention on their services. It’s easy to build lists of potential services you can offer. It’s harder to fake a proven investment in Drupal.
If you can dig a little deeper, take a look at the list of Drupal Certified Partners over on Drupal.org. These are agencies with a proven commitment to the open source community, through contributions given back to Drupal, and tend to be the most knowledgeable and dedicated professionals for working with Drupal.
Remember, any agency can claim to do Drupal, but not everyone follows best practices. Drupal' s insanely flexible… which is great! – but it means it’s easy to screw it up, or build a site that looks great on launch but falls apart soon after. It can be hard to know, but the most knowledgeable firms demonstrate Drupal expertise through case studies, articles, and speaking engagements.
For large organizations in government or higher ed, where accessibility, security, and performance really matter, you can’t afford to hire the wrong team.
You want knowledgeable, experienced Drupal developers, and agencies with a proven track record of building sites in Drupal.
